When the new eligibility rule takes effect

The rule was adopted June 23, 2026, but it phases in by enrollment year.

Fall 2027 and later — full new model

Athletes first enrolling full-time in fall 2027 or later are governed entirely by the five-year, age-based model. No old-rules comparison.

Fall 2026 and current athletes — better of the two

If you first enroll in fall 2026, or you're a current athlete with eligibility remaining after 2025–26, your school applies the old rules or the new model, whichever is more favorable to you. See current athletes.

Why the phase-in matters

The transition window protects athletes who built their plans around redshirts and the four-in-five system. It also means the two systems run side by side for several years — which is exactly why a clear checker that compares both is useful right now.
